Day 28: Little House on Nantucket

Here is our little house on Nantucket, it's not much, but the efficiency of the space is incredible; my compliments to the architect.

Day 27: Moving in on Nantucket

Today my family and I moved into our small house on Nantucket. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of friends here at the moment, but this will be a good opportunity to start training hard, perfect the paper work for these films, and perhaps do some summer reading.

Day 26: Finley Home Night

Today was unfortunately mostly spent in the backseat of a car... However, upon walking my dog the warm night air reminded me how nice it is to be outside. On my walk back, I noticed how interesting the light escaping the windows of this house was.

Day 25: Sagamore Beach

Today I was joined by Matt and Mandy as we scouted a location for one of our up coming films. The golden hour was glorious.

Day 24: Seawanhaka Sunset

This is the sunset witnessed tonight from the boat "Spirit" in Seawanhaka's bay. Yes, it's a cliché sunset shot, but it's what the day has left me with.

Day 22: Above The Clouds

What a view it is from the sky... knowing of all the people dealing with the trivial struggles of life. It's important to see from this perspective every now and then; use the horizon a point of reference to put the whole world in balance with your own existence.

Day 21: The Fastest 8 at The Beijing Olympics

This is the shell the men's heavy weight Canadian crew team won in, in the Beijing Olympics in 2008. It sits here in the Harvard boat house because the 5 seat rower, rowed at Harvard and donated it.

Notice the olympic rings to the right of the name.

Day 16: Packing for Harvard

Tomorrow I go off to Harvard for the Charles river rowing camp, should be a great experience. Unfortunately, I will not be able to bring a camera or computer. I will try to conduct this experiment completely from my phone, it may suffer in quality compared to my Canon 7D, but at least it will get the job done. Please excuse the poor picture, kinda ran out of time to actually take a picture today...

Day 15: The Storm

Today was spent mostly indoors because of the rain. It was the heaviest and most intense storm this summer. The sound of thunder is exciting to me, I like knowing that the world around me is active and reacting to the constantly changing atmosphere; I like being aware of the awesome power that exists in nature. However... today I just really wanted to be outside, I sighed as I took this photo.

Day 14: Light and Sound Among The Cues

What you are currently looking at is a test shot for an up and coming film I'm working on with Matthew Gutierrez, my partner in crime if it was a crime to make movies. The film, as you can see, is set in a billiard room. I won't dissolve anything else at this time for it is still very early in preproduction and I am waiting on permits. Look forward to seeing more about this project and others this summer.

Day 13: Reflection

Today was definitely a day of reflection for me. It's important to stop every once in a while and ask yourself what truly makes you happy. Life is short and you only have so much time to find purpose and meaning before the inevitable. Checking the course charted ahead of you is an important part of the journey, for the fog of life can leave you in such desolation. Don't take your eyes off the destination, and soon you'll see the silhouette of happiness behind the fog of the future.

Enough preachy, flowery, bullshit. Back to work.

Day 12: Good Times in Oyster Bay

Unfortunately, I wasn't by a computer last night, so I did not have time to get a picture up, but I'll make this post to make up for it. It rained again last night, but for a brief amount of time, it was actually quite sunny and nice, good weather to take a drive by the water as the Fleet Foxes' new album flowed through the summer air and leaked out sun roof.

This was actually taken on an iPhone. Something I'm trying to experiment with because I may not be able to have a computer with me next week and I need a mobile solution.

Day 11: Sleep No More

Today, I spent my time in New York City. This photo was taken at columbia university as a few summer term students move this ostentatious flower arrangement across the center of campus. Where it was going and why it was constructed, I did not have time to discover. Nevertheless, it was impressive.

Following my visit to columbia, I saw a unique theatrical performance called "Sleep No More". It is unlike anything I have experienced before... I won't say too much, as I don't want to spoil this performance, but I will say, that it transported me into end of the roaring 20s in a film noir styled world where I and the rest of the audience felt like ghosts (everyone must where a mask), watching the lives of a few individuals become consumed by hell. It was a truly jaw dropping experience and if you are in the new york area, I highly recommend it.

Unfortunately, there is no photography... or speaking for that matter, otherwise I would have had some truly amazing shots for you this evening.

Day 6: Living off Keys

The skilled worker is always a marvel. Watch closely as with such ease a carpenter constructs a beautiful table, or a sculpture turns a block of marble into a man. It doen't matter it's whether it's a tight rope walker or a blackjack dealer seamlessly and gracefully maneuvering a deck of cards between players, the possibilities provided by the human bodies complex nerve endings are limitless.

Today, I watched a jazz pianist at work. Using the basic cord changes in his pallet, his fingers weaved up and down the keys as he was entranced by the music and took those with an appreciation to a place dominated by swing and grove.

Day 5: Lurking Stone Monkeys

When silence envelopes... and all you can hear is your own breathing and the sound of birds, the small but valuable obscurities of life manifest in front of you. I had walked passed this wall many times, but only recently did this stone chimpanzee, perched on a the bricks, reveal itself to me. It has been hidden from view by the smothering by ivy; that is... all but it's childlike hand.

Day 4: Surrounded by Masks

I'm sitting by the pool, and I discover that I'm surrounded by masks; completely surrounded by masks.

Day 3: Returning from The Concert

I sit impatiently as each pianist plays their two pieces in order according to the program. No doubt each of these students of music has worked hard to prepare it, but I only have so much tolerance for amateur piano playing. Perhaps if I was one of their parents, sitting eagerly in the front row with a video camera, I would be more entertained.

After wading through an hour filled with the incessant rambling of notes by played by musicians who pick their noses, finally my sister takes her place at the keys to close the concert with Beethoven's famous Für Elise. How refreshing it was as the precision of each bar cleared the air of the mundane and repetitive music played earlier. For a brief moment, I shared unjustly in her glory as her brother.

A father and his daughter leave through the old mahogany door of a church with the closing of the  recital. She caries flowers, for this recital surpassed the others of previous years in importance; it was her last recital.

We step out of the church and into the fresh, summer afternoon air and all is right with the world.

Day 2: Curiously Out of Place

Out of place in my own home. I find that whenever I return after the school year, I am shocked to rediscover that the world doesn't end with boundaries of a school campus. The extra free time I have is refreshing as I can finally reflect on this past year.

I use the morning to organize my belongings with the company of two curious house cats as I prepare for the long awaited summer ahead.

Day 1: Moving Out

Today is the first day of summer, I arrived home this afternoon in an SUV fully packed with the contents of a seventeen year old boy's dorm room. I've decided to start my summer with a new project I was inspired to take on from a film I saw on vimeo called Today

The projects entails me posting one picture everyday this summer with the purpose of representing the day. I've noticed that whenever I take a picture, no matter how simple the subject, I can always recall the exact situation and context of the photo. Hopefully, what this will allow me to do, is give meaning and organization to the summer which is often a jumble of random events that can pass as quickly as they can be forgotten. My goal is to try to improve my memory, and give purpose to each day; carpe diem in a way. At then end of the summer, my plan is to put together a film from these stills.

I'll be making a set on flickr which will link to this blog which will then link to my website. Follow me if you'd like, it should be an interesting experiment, thanks for reading.
